Athletic Director

** TITLE**:

GENERAL DESCRIPTION__**

Provides leadership in the development, organization, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the athletic program.  Achieving excellence requires that the Athletic Director work collaboratively to lead and nurture members of the athletic staff, to communicate effectively with coaches, athletes, parents, members of the community, as well as colleagues from other districts and schools.  Inherent in this position are the responsibilities for supervision, planning, administration, financial management and public relations.  It is the belief that the duties, time requirements, and responsibilities of coaches and athletic directors are very demanding, and that a coach or athletic director can be a more effective employee if he/she is not serving in both capacities at the same time.

** QUALIFICATIONS**:

·         Bachelors’ Degree

·         A valid Rhode Island Teaching Certificate

·         A valid Rhode Island Coaching Certificate

·         Previous experience as a coach is desirable

·         Knowledge of the overall operation of an athletic program

·         Knowledge of budget/fiscal  management

·         Successful interview

REPORTS TO:                      High School Principal or Designee

SUPERVISES:                       Assist Principal in supervision of coaches and others involved in school athletic program.

JOB GOAL:                           To provide overall leadership and coordination among the various sports at the high school and middle school that facilitates and provides youngsters a worthwhile learning experiences.

EVALUATION:                    Performance evaluated by High School Principal

COMPENSATION:              Athletic Director’s stipend in accordance with Appendix for coaches’ salaries.  Work year of twelve months

TEACHING DUTIES:          Reduced teaching load with a maximum four teaching classes.

** DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

  • Supervision
  • Observes coaches both during practice and during competition sufficiently in order to make future recommendations in terms of job expectancies.
  • Make recommendations to the School Principals as to coaches’ job assignments
  • Provides a written evaluation for each varsity coach and assistant coaches at the end of each session in accordance with coaches’ handbook.
  • Responsible for evaluating and interviewing all new candidates for positions collaboratively with an interview team.
  • Assure that all coaching credentials are valid and complete before forwarding them to personnel file at Central Office, prior to appointment by School Committee.
  • Serve as the first line of intervention with coaches, student athletics, parents, spectators and community.
  • Mediate the resolution of problems, issues and concerns that may arise related to athletics.
  • Provide a mechanism through which students and the community may express their concerns.

9.      Performs such other duties as the Principal and/or Superintendent of Schools may direct.

  • Planning
  • Responsible for the development of all interscholastic game schedules.
  • Responsible for contracting all game officials.

3.      Makes arrangements for all interscholastic events, such as transportation, when required.

  • Attends all home athletic contests and/or arranges for proper supervision of home athletic contests by administrative personnel.
  • Acts as tournament manager for all league and tournament playoff activities that are assigned to the school district.
  • Sends reminders of coming events to schools and officials.
  • Responsible, along with the Principal, after consulting the head coach, for the cancellation or postponement of contracted contests because of non-playing conditions.

8.      Coordinates electronically the use of all athletic facilities in the school district with the Facilities Department, the Building Principals and Central Office, by groups outside the school.

9.      Arrange for an athletic trainer at all home varsity football games.

10.  Responsible for procuring necessary equipment and supplies for the athletic program in a timely manner and in accordance with the Middletown Public Schools policies and guidance.

11.  Attend required State meetings.

12.  Performs such other duties as the Principal and/or Superintendent of Schools may direct.

  • Administration
  • Responsible to the Superintendent of Schools and works under the direction of the High School Principal and the overall athletic program.
  • Responsible for administering all interscholastic policies and procedures working within compliance of all appropriate Federal and State laws, as well as the Rules and By-Laws of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.
  • Responsible for all recommendations for the improvement of adequate facilities.
  • Resolves conflicts within the ranks of the Athletic Department.
  • Maintains a permanent file of players, medical examinations, insurance forms, records, parent consent forms, payments, etc.
  • Maintains permanent records for each sport, such as wins and losses, outstanding records, letterpersons, etc.
  • Promulgate a student athletic handbook, maintains a file of all athletic suspensions and expulsions from teams in regard to giving each athlete “due process”.
  • Responsible for determining scholastic eligibility of all candidates for athletic teams on a weekly/grading period/semester basis and for certifying their eligibility on the proper State forms.

9.      Provides for the cleaning, repairing and storing of all athletic equipment and maintaining a perpetual inventory of all equipment.

  • Coordinates with the Director of Facilities the repair and maintenance of varsity athletic field, track, baseball field and gymnasiums, including physical, education facilities.
  • Manages athletic facilities and controls the use of same by band, football teams, track team, etc.  Hires or makes necessary arrangements to provide ushers, parking, security and other services required by the athletic operation.
  • Works out a reasonable and equitable program for the utilization of the concession stands.
  • Responsible for the operation and organization of the press boxes.
  • Responsible for the annual review of the athletic policy and staff handbook.
  • Constantly evaluates the program, always seeking ways of improving interscholastic athletics.
  • Presents recommendations for changes in athletic policies to the Principal and Superintendent of Schools.
  • Assist in the coordination of the Substance Abuse Program /Policy presented to all athletes and parents at the beginning of each season.
  • Develop a district Athletic Director handbook.
  • Protect the confidentiality of records and information gained as part of professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within the legal confines.

20.  Performs such other duties as the Principal and/or Superintendent of Schools may direct.

  • Business/Financial
  • Seeks ways for supporting and financing the athletic program.

2.      Submits a financial report to the Principal and Superintendent of Schools at the end of each year.

3.      Receives equipment quotations from authorized coaches, evaluates such requests and approves appropriate orders.

4.      Works in conjunction with the High School Principal and the district Business Manager in developing the yearly budget for the athletic program.

5.      Performs such other duties as the Principal and/or Superintendent of Schools may direct.

6.      In coordination with the Head Coaches, develop and maintain a five (5) year expenditure plan.

7.      Submit an updated five (5) year plan on a yearly basis to the district Business Manager.

8.      Utilize the district financial system to account for revenues and expenditures.

  • Responsible for game management at all home games interscholastic contests and when admission is charged, is responsible for the safekeeping and deposit of gate receipts in a timely manager

10.  Performs such other duties as the Principal and/or Superintendent of Schools may direct.

  • Public Relations

1.      Works collaboratively with community agencies and partnerships i.e. Salve Regina University.

2.      Supervises all media broadcasts, as well as the public address system operation at the various games.

  • Plans, organizes and supervises all athletic awards programs with the Athletic Boosters Club, with the approval of the Principal.
  • Promotes publicity for all interscholastic sports, such as sports brochures, press, and radio for all schools and shall assist the Athletic Boosters Club in the organization of the game programs.

5.      Represents the school in all athletic business at league, conference and State meetings.

6.      Attends and serves as school liaison at all Athletic Boosters Club meetings.

7.      Maintains an active program that promotes sportsmanship and welcomes the competing teams and guests.

8.      Performs such other duties as the Principal and/or Superintendent of Schools may direct.
