THE CITY OF NEWPORT

RESOLUTION

OF THE
COUNCIL
No. 2025-162

NAMING OF PUBLIC AREAS

WHEREAS, the family of Jeremiah K. “J.K.” Sullivan has approached the City of Newport to recognize his significant contributions to the city, namely the paving of Thames St. in 1908 and;

WHEREAS, the family has asked to rename the intersection of Thames St. and Green St, where Mr. Sullivan placed cobblestones reading “JKS-1908” into the roadway, J.K. Sullivan Square. And;

WHEREAS, the City currently has no clear policy when it comes to naming or memorializing public areas with the exception of memorial benches, that; NOW THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED, the Newport City Council asks City Administration, with help from the Tree & Open Space Commission, to draft a policy to be followed for this current and future requests for the naming pf public areas. And, also; AND BE IT FURTHER

RESOLVED, that this policy states standards for verifying the community involvement and activities, plaque size, location, impact to public safety, financial liability and any other matters the group sees fit.
