RESOLUTION

OF THE
COUNCIL

No.2026-45

WHEREAS, The Jonathan Easton Cemetery (NT015) in Newport, RI, is a small, historic family plot located near Easton Road and Faxon Green, serving as the resting place for members of the early settler Easton family; AND

WHEREAS, the lot contains graves of the Easton family, who were pivotal in Newport’s founding, with family members including Nicholas Easton (1675) buried in the area; AND

WHEREAS, the site serves as a testament to the early colonial history of the Easton family, who arrived in Newport from Portsmouth on May 1, 1639; AND

WHEREAS, in recent years, the Historic Cemetery Advisory Commission (HCAC) has been concerned about the condition of the site which has occasionally been maintained by neighbors and volunteers; AND

WHEREAS, the commission believes the site has been abandoned and the city is the only reasonable entity to preserve the burial ground for future generations; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED, that the city administration advise the council on the steps to legally maintain the burial grounds, ensuring legal public access and the rights to installing historical signage.
