THE CITY OF NEWPORT

RESOLUTION

OF THE
COUNCIL

No. 2024-114

WHEREAS, as we head into the holiday season our local retail businesses are getting ready for what hopes to be a strong shopping year; AND

WHEREAS, some of our local merchants run smaller, boutique shops, they often struggle against the larger box stores and online retailers; AND

WHEREAS, in an effort to push the "Shop Local" narrative to help such businesses, we as a city should try and help promote shopping in Newport; AND

WHEREAS, streets such as Franklin St, which is one of the oldest commercial streets in Newport with shop buildings dating back to the 1770's, do not have the supporting infrastructure to attract shoppers off of Thames St.; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED, the City Council shall ask City Administration to look into ways to help these businesses through lighting, signage and other possible structural needs to allow all pedestrians to safely walk down these streets.
