This resolution approves the purchase of a police vehicle for The City of Newport Police Department to address increased operational demand and fleet shortages. Current patrol capacity is maxed out, limiting availability during peak periods. THE CITY OF NEWPORT

RESOLUTION

OF THE
COUNCIL
No. 2026-112

WHEREAS, The Newport Police Department is experiencing increased operational demand, and a shortage of available marked police vehicles; and

WHEREAS, The existing patrol fleet is consistently utilized at maximum capacity, resulting in limited availability during peak periods, overlapping detail assignments, and instances where patrol supervisors must rotate vehicles, negatively impacting operation efficiency; and

WHEREAS, A vehicle is required to support Department of Transportation (DOT) enforcement grants—including DUI, Click It or Ticket, Speed Enforcement, Distracted Driving, and Pedestrian Safety—as well as detail use and supplementing the Uniform Patrol Division; and

WHEREAS, ongoing maintenance for the newly acquired vehicle will be provided through the City’s existing arrangement with Transdev Fleet Services. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT

RESOLVED, That the purchase from McGovern Municipal HQ, of Marlborough, Massachusetts via the Greater Boston Police Council contract, for a not to exceed cost of $82,641.50, is hereby approved and the Council Chair is authorized to sign said contract on behalf of the City, subject to favorable review by the City Solicitor.
