2025-52 Supporting Senate Bill S0678 which would implement a parking tax

THE CITY OF NEWPORT

RESOLUTION

OF THE
COUNCIL

No. 2025-52

WHEREAS, Rhode Island State Senators Bissaillon and Mack are introducing the Parking Services Taxation Act S-0678; AND

WHEREAS, this act would authorize and empower each municipality to pass ordinances requiring all sales of parking services be taxed at a rate of no more than seven percent(7%);AND,

WHEREAS, any revenue generated through parking services taxes authorized by this amended act, shall not be included in the calculation of a municipality’s maximum levy increase; AND

WHEREAS, there are many privately owned parking lots throughout the City of Newport and the possibility of a parking lot tax could have such a positive impact on increasing revenues; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED, that the City Council of Newport show support for the Parking Services Taxation Act and directs the City Clerk to send a copy of this resolution to the city’s legislative delegation.
