THE CITY OF NEWPORT

RESOLUTION

OF THE
COUNCIL

No.2024-13

WHEREAS, the Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is one of Newport’s most cherished annual celebrations; and

WHEREAS, in reflection of the City’s Irish heritage, as early as 1842, Newporters were known to parade in honor of Saint Patrick; and

WHEREAS, The parade became an annual event in 1957, making this year’s parade scheduled for March 16, 2024 the 68th Annual Parade; and

WHEREAS, the parade is organized and funded through the work of the Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade committee, which is comprised entirely of volunteers; and

WHEREAS, for years, a Kelly Green Street Line has adorned portions of the route sparking anticipation of the parade and sunnier, warmer days ahead;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED, that the City Council requests that the City of Newport continue the tradition of painting a Kelly Green Street Line along the route each year in advance of the parade, beginning on Broadway in front of City Hall to Marlborough Street; and Thames Street from the intersection of Narragansett Avenue to Fifth Ward Square.
