HEAD COACH
** MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**:
•Coaching experience at the High School/Middle School (where applicable) level preferred
•Valid R. I. Coaching Certification
•Effective communication skills, oral and written
•Successful interview with Selection Committee
•Must successfully complete a BCI check
** REPORTS TO**: Athletic Director
** JOB GOAL**:
To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success and provide instruction that will lead to the development of moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline and self-confidence.
** PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES**:
1. Have a thorough knowledge of the athletic policies approved by the Board and shall be responsible for their implementation by the entire staff of the sports program.
2. Have knowledge of the district’s existing athletic program and state and league regulations, implement these regulations consistently and interpret them for staff.
3. Understand the proper administrative line of command and refer all requests or grievances through proper channels.
4. Be aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require his/her attendance.
5. Assist the Athletic Director in scheduling, transportation and meeting requirements for sporting events.
6. Assist in the necessary preparation of scheduled sporting events or practices, adhere to scheduled facility use times and coordinate the program with maintenance and other school employees.
7. Provide documentation to fulfill state and district requirements concerning student physical examinations, parent/guardian consent and eligibility.
8. Provide proper safeguards for the maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
9. Advise the Activities Director and recommend policy, method or procedural changes.
10. Establish the fundamental philosophies, skills and techniques to be taught by staff.
11. Train and instruct staff and encourage professional growth through attendance at clinics in accordance with Board policy.
12. Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation and at season’s end, analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants and volunteer coaches.
13. Maintain discipline and work to increase morale and cooperation.
14. Provide training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete.
15. Give constant attention to athletes’ grades and conduct.
16. Be present at practices and games and provide assistance, guidance and safeguards for participants.
17. Initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies.
18. Complete and submit an accident report in accordance with Board policy. He/she also shall complete other necessary related paperwork and submit it to the Athletic Director.
19. Direct managers and statisticians.
20. Determine discipline, define procedures concerning due process when disciplinary action is necessary and contact parents/guardians when an athlete becomes ineligible.
21. Assist athletes in their college or advanced education selection.
22. Plan and implement in-season and out-of-season conditioning programs.
23. Participate in the budgeting function with the Athletic Director by establishing requirements for the next season.
24. Recommend equipment guidelines as to type, style, color or technical specifications.
25. Be responsible for operating within budget appropriations.
26. Be accountable for all equipment and collect the cost of any equipment lost or not returned.
27. Arrange for the issuing and storing of equipment.
28. Submit an annual inventory of equipment to the Athletic Director.
29. Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
30. Monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices and authorize who may enter, issue or check out equipment.
31. Permit athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
32. Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility.
33. Be responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
34. Secure all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving the building.
35. Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
36. Organize parents/guardians, coaches, players and guests for preseason meetings to review expectations.
37. Promote the sport within the school by recruiting students that are not in another sports program.
38. Promote the sport outside the school through the news media, youth programs or in any other feasible manner.
39. Prepare quality, effective and accurate oral and written news releases.
40. Be responsible for maintaining good public relations with the news media, booster clubs, parents/guardians, officials, volunteers and fans.
41. Present information to the news media concerning schedules, tournaments and results.
42. A head coach shall perform other related duties as directed by the Athletic Director, Building Principal or Superintendent.
** EVALUATION**:
Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Athletic Director with input from student-athletes and parents.
