ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT COMMISSION
Restatement of the Mission, Purpose and Authorities of the Energy and Environment Commission
WHEREAS, City Council established the Energy and Environment Commission by Resolution (No. 2008-36) on March 12, 2008; and
WHEREAS, since the establishment of the Energy and Environment commission, information and research have substantially expanded our understanding of climate change and severe storms, and have made great advances in technology and scientific study; and
WHEREAS, Newport is experiencing increasingly regular and severe storms and is facing substantial challenges, ranging from coastal erosion to flooding; and
WHEREAS, in response to these changes, Newport has established the position of a Director of Resilience and Sustainability, who is expected to help lead the City’s response to these growing challenges; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the Council hereby restates the Mission, Purpose and Authorities of the Energy and Environment Commission as follows:
The Mission and Purpose of the Energy and Environment Commission shall be to serve as the primary advisory board to city staff and City Council on all matters relating to energy and the environment and how these relate to the City of Newport, its culture, its economy, and its future; with specific focus on climate change, sustainability and resiliency. The Commission should liaise, collaborate, and, as directed by the City Council and staff, represent the city with other organizations and entities, both public and private, in pursuit of this mission.
Further, it is tasked to promote and educate the citizens of Newport on all related matters.
