THE CITY OF NEWPORT

RESOLUTION

OF THE
COUNCIL
No. 2025-63

WHEREAS, on February 13, 2013, the Newport City Council passed resolution no. 2013-018, to establish the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC), which included the statement that "Newport wishes to achieve, and progressively advance, status as a Bicycle Friendly Community through the Bicycle Friendly America Program of the League of American Bicyclist," and

WHEREAS, in October, 2013, Newport was awarded status as a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists based on an application jointly submitted by Bike Newport and the City of Newport, and

WHEREAS, the City is well-positioned to advance to the Silver level based on progress the City of Newport and Bike Newport have made in all 5 areas of focus in the past 12 years - education, enforcement, encouragement, engineering, and equity, and

WHEREAS, the application is due on June 25, 2025, and will require city departments to contribute data in the timeframe of the application, and

WHEREAS Bike Newport is able to again assist the City and the BPAC with this application, and

WHEREAS, bicycle friendly status is associated with benefits to tourism, health, economy, transportation, carbon reduction, and grant funding; NOW THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED, that staff in the City’s Public Safety and Resilience and Sustainability Departments will support Bike Newport and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC) to complete the Bicycle Friendly Community application by considering recommended actions and by providing the necessary data in the timeframe of the application deadline.
