RESOLUTION

OF THE
COUNCIL
No. 2026-38

WHEREAS: the City of Newport has been awarded a Certified Local Government (CLG) grant in the amount of $25,000 from the Rhode Island Historic Preservation & Heritage Commission (RIHPHC); and

WHEREAS: the purpose of this grant is to fund a building assessment of four historic structures located at the Newport Naval Hospital site consistent with the grant requirements; and

WHEREAS: the assessment will evaluate the condition of the buildings, determine the scope of rehabilitation necessary, and assess the economic feasibility of restoration and retention efforts; and

WHEREAS: the study will support compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (54 U.S.C. § 306108), which requires mitigation of adverse effects associated with the potential transfer of the property out of federal ownership; and

WHEREAS: the grant-funded work will provide critical documentation needed to inform future decision-making regarding the potential acquisition, preservation, and adaptive reuse of the site; and

WHEREAS: the Preservation Planner within the Department of Planning and Economic Development, in collaboration with the Historic District Commission, recommends acceptance of this grant; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT

RESOLVED: The City Council hereby authorizes the acceptance of the $25,000 Certified Local Government grant from the Rhode Island Historic Preservation & Heritage Commission and approves the execution of the related Subrecipient Agreement; AND BE IT FURTHER

RESOLVED: The Council Chair is hereby authorized to execute any and all documents necessary to accept and administer this grant on behalf of the City upon review of the City Solicitor and the funds shall be used for the purpose of conducting a building assessment of the historic structures at the Newport Naval Hospital site consistent with the grant requirements.
