DEAN OF STUDENTS – MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Appropriate R.I. Teaching Certification (Administration Certification preferred).
2. Bachelor's Degree (Master's Degree preferred).
3. Relevant credentials.
4. A minimum of five years teaching experience.
5. Ability to know and utilize technology in the teaching and learning process.
6. Support a vision that reflects an ALL STUDENTS classroom and school program.
7. Belief that all students are capable of academic achievement
8. Ability to use data to support the School Improvement Plan.
9. Support the implementation of the educational reform initiatives.
10. High level of personal organization, planning, and initiative.
11. Excellent communication skills with diverse constituents (teachers, parents, students, board members); clear writer, facilitator and public speaker.
12. Proven ability to proactively lead by example, effectively manage adults, and respond positively to feedback.
13. Ability to build strong relationships with students that are rooted in high expectations and social emotional well-being.
14. Experience with student information systems or other extensive databases.
15. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
16. Strong interpersonal skills.
17. Positive attitude.
18. Successful interview.
19. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Screening Committee may find appropriate.
Work Year: Based on 190 day personnel (the 60 hours beyond the 181 day school year will be mutually agreed upon to cover student activities outside the school day).
Citizenship, residency OR WORK VISA IN United States required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist the Principal, Assistant Principal(s) and staff in the development and implementation of positively oriented behavior supports with a focus on high academic and behavioral expectations, social emotional development, and a warm, safe and respectful school culture.
2. Lead the school’s student discipline system by establishing the social culture and behavioral supports needed for the school to be a safe, respectful, and effective learning environment for all students.
3. Identify researched based preventive practices to implement in the school that include:
a. Teach and support defined positive social expectations for students.
b. Acknowledge positive behavior through a reward system.
c. Identify consistent consequences for problem behavior.
d. Maintain on-going data collection that will be used for decision-making.
e. Support a continuum of intensive, individual intervention supports.
4. Support the following activities:
a. Lunch
b. After School detention
c. In school suspension
d. Out of school suspension and re-admit meetings
e. School dances, proms, field trips and other school events.
5. Lead an attendance team in conjunction with the school attendance officer and other support personnel. This would include monitoring and analyzing data, implementing school-wide interventions, and supporting students and families with chronic absenteeism.
6. Support and coach teachers in behavior management, relationship building and closing the loop with discipline issues.
7. Facilitate events such as parent workshops, community service events, and school wide culture building activities, and other student & family events.
8. Lead staff trainings on behavior management.
9. Serve on school improvement team, student support team and other committees and teams as assigned.
10. Work closely with principal to revise policies and procedures for students and staff.
11. Manage the documentation of all student behavioral concerns, including in school and out of school suspensions and coordinating and leading return meetings.
12. Consistently enforce school rules and regulations with respect to the Student Handbook, Federal and State laws, regulations and student rights and School Committee policies.
13. Keep accurate documentation in Student Information Systems regarding all students referred to the Dean.
14. Implement and support PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) school-wide.
15. Work collaboratively with the Student Attendance Officer, Behavioral Specialist, the School Resource Officer, School Psychologist, School Social Worker, Guidance Counselor, and other school personnel.
