Resolution

A Resolution Requesting the City host trainings on the Rhode Island Code of Ethics and Open Meetings Act

WHEREAS, the City of Newport benefits from a citizen driven form of government, consisting of a City Council, School Committee, and over a dozen boards and commissions; AND

WHEREAS, citizens who elect to serve on these boards and commissions are active members of our community, who, with their families, are often active with local organizations, institutions and businesses, contributing to Newport’s uniquely strong community fabric; AND

WHEREAS, these familial and community connections are a source of important strength and insight for those who wish to serve the City, however, must be carefully navigated to ensure decisions are made in a transparent and fair manner; AND

WHEREAS, the State of Rhode Island has enacted law and procedures to direct these actions, including the Rhode Island Code of Ethics ("Ethics Code") and the Open Meetings Act ("OMA"); AND

WHEREAS, the State of Rhode Island supports trainings ("Trainings") for local government officials, provided by the Rhode Island Ethics Commission ("Commission") and the Office of the Rhode Island Attorney General ("Attorney General"); NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT

RESOLVED, that the Newport City Council hereby requests that the City work with the Attorney General’s Office and Commission to facilitate a joint training for Newport City Council, School Committee and members of the City’s boards and commissions.
