2024-111 Gift to the City from Art & Newport - Leela the Elephant

COUNCIL
No. 2024-111
WHEREAS Dodie Kazanjian and Edith McBean of Art&Newport have offered the City one of the Great Elephant Migration elephants to be returned to Newport for permanent display to memorialize the 2024 event. They have also pledged biannual varnishing of the statue in perpetuity. The offer is contingent upon a binding agreement between the City and Art&Newprt. There is a deadline of October 31st for the City to accept the offer; and
WHEREAS, the Administration recommends that Council accept the offer of the gift from Arts & Newport of Leela the Elephant from the Great Elephant Migration which will be stored for the winter of 2024-25 pending discussions with Art&Newport and the City's applicable boards and commissions to determine a permanent location for display. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED: that the Newport City Council hereby accepts the offer of the gift of Leela the elephant from Art&Newport and directs the Administration to move forward with the agreement for same and the Mayor is authorized to sign said agreement on behalf of the City subject to review of the City Solicitor.
