RESOLUTION SUPPORTING HOUSE BILL- 5784
WHEREAS, House Bill 5784 sponsored by Representative Lauren Carson and others, ENTITLED "SALES & USE TAX" as it relates to any hosting property which will extend the 5% hotel tax to whole houses rented as short term rentals; AND
WHEREAS The 5% will be returned to the municipality, where its collected to be used for housing, infrastructure, and climate resilience; AND
WHEREAS, this will close the loophole in the state hotel tax statute by extending the tax to whole house rentals, thereby providing offset income for our resiliency program in the City of Newport; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT
RESOLVED, the City of Newport supports this legislation to help our city and other coastline communities address the impact of climate change and resiliency. The City Council requests this resolution be shared with both the members of the Senate and the House.
