CITY OF NEWPORT

RESOLUTION

OF THE
COUNCIL

No. 2025-173

WHEREAS, the City has an active community electricity program, launched after Council authorization to develop the program and approval of the plan by both the City Council and the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission; and

WHEREAS, the goals of the community electricity program include providing the entire Newport community with options for competitively-priced electricity supply and more renewable energy; and

WHEREAS, in 2022 the City selected the current electricity supplier for the program, NextEra Energy Resources, for a five-year term as part of a multi-municipal buying group comprised of Barrington, Central Falls, Narragansett, Newport, Portsmouth, Providence and South Kingstown; and

WHEREAS, since launch, the NextEra Energy Resources has consistently provided residents in the program with lower-cost electricity supply than RI Energy, while providing cleaner electricity via Rhode Island-based renewables, and program participation has remained high; and

WHEREAS, following a competitive bidding process, staff of the multi-municipality buying group recommend extending the NextEra Energy Resources contract for an additional five-year term in order to continue delivering the benefits of the community electricity program to our residents and businesses. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT

RESOLVED: that the City Council authorizes the Council Chair to execute an extension of the Electricity Supply Agreement to provide electricity supply for Newport’s community electricity program on behalf of the City, subject to favorable review of the City Solicitor.
