RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT

In Support of the Edward King House Senior Center’s "Revolutionary Hydrants Project"
Celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the Founding of the United States of America

WHEREAS, the City of Newport, Rhode Island, holds a proud place in the history of the American Revolution as a community deeply connected to the ideals of liberty, independence, and democracy; AND

WHEREAS, the year 2026 will mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, a milestone worthy of reflection, commemoration, and community celebration; AND

WHEREAS, the Edward King House Senior Center, a longstanding nonprofit organization dedicated to the enrichment, engagement, and well-being of older adults in the community, has proposed a public art initiative entitled "The Revolutionary Hydrants Project"; AND

WHEREAS, this project seeks to artistically transform select fire hydrants throughout the City of Newport into painted representations of notable figures connected to Newport’s Revolutionary War history, including local heroes, historical leaders, and allies who contributed to America’s independence; AND

WHEREAS, the project will engage local artists and volunteers, foster civic pride, promote historical education, and beautify public spaces in keeping with Newport’s reputation for creativity, cultural vitality, and community spirit; AND

WHEREAS, the Edward King House Senior Center has committed to working collaboratively with the Newport Fire Department, the Department of Public Services, and other relevant city departments to ensure all safety, maintenance, and preservation standards are met; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT

RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Newport hereby grants its support and permission for the Edward King House Senior Center to move forward with The Revolutionary Hydrants Project in coordination with appropriate city departments; AND BE IT FURTHER

RESOLVED, that the Council commends the Edward King House Senior Center for its leadership in developing creative, educational, and community-building projects that honor Newport’s history and celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary.
