2024-25 Recognizing the Edward King House Senior Center on becoming a Nationally Accredited Senior Center in Rhode Island by NISC in March 2024

Resolution
WHEREAS, the Edward King House Senior Center, has involved, enriched, and empowered seniors over the age of 50 in the City of Newport since 1969; AND
WHEREAS, seniors are an integral aspect of our community, providing wisdom and lifelong experience that people of all ages can benefit from; AND
WHEREAS, the Edward King House Senior Center, through a wide variety of programs in education, fitness, arts, recreation, travel, and volunteer service has enhanced the ability of seniors to remain independent so they may remain an asset for all citizens; AND
WHEREAS, the Edward King House Senior Center, has facilitated the dignity and self-esteem of seniors, thus tapped their experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, enabling them to continue to contribute to our community; AND
WHEREAS, The Edward King House Senior Center with close to 1000 with members sees an average of 500 participants per week (26,000 annually) and serves as the hub for inquiries for support services citywide; AND
WHEREAS, NCOA's National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) is the accrediting body for 10,000 senior centers nationwide; AND
WHEREAS, The Edward King House Senior Center has been recognized by NISC as a Nationally Accredited Senior Center; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT
RESOLVED, that the Newport City Council congratulates the Edward King House Senior Center for becoming a Nationally Accredited Senior Center in Rhode Island, as awarded by NISC in March 2024. And call upon all citizens to recognize the special contributions that the Edward King House Senior Center makes in enhancing the well-being of seniors in our community.
