Resolution

WHEREAS, Kevin N. Sheekey was a lifelong fifth ward resident and the epitome of a great Newporter, who passed away far too early after a courageous battle with colon cancer on July 26, 2020; AND

WHEREAS, Kevin was the proud father of the love and joy of his life, his daughter Keeley Rose Sheekey, was a graduate of Rogers High School in Newport, was the successful owner and operator of Newport Hardwood Floors for many years, and was a true friend to all who knew him and a loving son and brother; AND

WHEREAS, Kevin (Sheek) was a loyal member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Dennis E Collins Division 1 Newport, a member of the Newport Rugby Football Club and a faithful parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Newport; AND

WHEREAS, Kevin was a capable waterman and steward of Newport Harbor who spent countless hours on the bay, usually by way of Newport’s Stone Pier; AND

WHEREAS, Prior to his passing, Kevin was an ardent supporter and promoter of expanding The Stone Pier so that it may better accommodate the many residents and visitors who use it every day; AND

WHEREAS, It is in no small part due to Kevin’s vision and efforts that the expanded pier is in place today; AND

WHEREAS, At its meeting on July 11, 2024, the Newport Waterfront Commission voted unanimously to request that the Newport City Council officially act to name the new Stone Pier Dinghy Dock in honor of Kevin Sheekey; NOW THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED: That the Newport City Council hereby authorizes that The Stone Pier Dinghy Dock henceforth be known to all as "The Kevin N. Sheekey Stone Pier Dinghy Dock; AND BE IT FURTHER

RESOLVED: That a copy of this resolution be presented to Ms. Keeley Sheekey upon passage.
