R E S O L U T I O N

Newport Energy & Environment Commission
Summer Panel Series on Climate Change
and Resilience on Aquidneck Island

WHEREAS, the City of Newport is currently and will continue to be impacted
by climate change in the form of severe storms, sea level rise,
coastal erosion, and others; AND

WHEREAS, all municipalities on Aquidneck Island are currently working to
increase sustainability and resilience in their operations and
developments; AND

WHEREAS, informed community engagement is critical to the development of
equitable and reasonable climate solutions; AND

WHEREAS, the City Council on May 22, 2024 unanimously passed a resolution
to update the Mission, Purpose, and Authorities of the Newport
Energy and Environment Commission to include the direction to
educate the citizens of Newport on all matters related to energy
and environment; NOW THEREFORE, be it

RESOLVED: that the City of Newport City Council directs the Energy and
Environment Commission to design and execute a series of
educational events to inform and involve the public on climate,
resilience, and sustainability topics such as those outlined above;
BE IT FURTHER

RESOLVED: the Commission shall collaborate with other Board and
Commissions, as well as governmental agencies, academic
institutions, and relevant nonprofits to determine appropriate
experts to serve as informational consultants, participants,
presenters, and facilitators; AND BE IT FURTHER

RESOLVED: the Commission shall work with the City staff and administration
to plan, promote, and carry out said educational events.
