R E S O L U T I O N

C O U N C I L

WHEREAS, The well-being and care of Newport residents with regard to public
safety is of utmost concern to the city council and residents of The
City of Newport; AND
WHEREAS, Of particular concern to the city council regarding public safety in
recent years has been excessive motor vehicle speed, lack of
attention by motor vehicle operators to crosswalks, stop signs,
school zone indicators, children at play and more; AND
WHEREAS, The Newport City Council chooses to send a strong message to
users of our city public roadways as well as our citizens that the
council and city administration will take measures to do what is
necessary to drastically reduce such lack of adherence to local
motor vehicle related ordinances; NOW THEREFORE, be it
RESOLVED: That the Newport City Council directs the city administration to
draft suggested deterrents to said motor vehicle behavior by way of
ordinance changes or ordinance additions that may include, but
are not limited to, placement of speed bumps in certain areas
located within the Third Ward in the city, placement of “speed
sensitivity” alerts in the above mentioned locations, and additional
crosswalks with “yield” signs placed in the middle of said
crosswalks; AND BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED: That the Newport City Council asks that these suggested
ordinances be delivered for review by the city council nine days
prior to the city council meeting immediately following the city
council meeting of Wednesday, July 10, 2024
