Minutes for Boards and Commissions Interviews for the Historic District Commission and Canvassing Authority held October 1, 2024 at City Hall, ground floor conference room, 43 Broadway, Newport, RI 02840.

The following Council members were present:

The Council convened at 5:02 p.m. and interviewed the following applicants:

For Historic District Commission Alternate Position:

5:00-5:20 PM     Kenny Benell

5:45-6:10 PM     Brooke Richter

6:30 PM              Ben Willet – Candidate did not appear

All candidates for the Historic District Commission were asked the following questions:

-          What is your interest in serving on this commission?

-          Do you have any professional background or experience that would be helpful?

-          How do you feel about the strictness and historical accurateness of repairs and materials made?

-          How do you believe economic development relates to the historic district?

-          Are you aware of any conflicts of interest you may have regarding matters that may come before the board or commission, and if so, how would you navigate them?

-          Are you prepared for the time commitment required to serve on the HDC?

-          Have you attended and HDC meeting?

-          What is your understanding of the role of commissioners and board members and how their work relates to the Council?

Canvassing Authority Alternate Position:

5:20 – 5:45 PM  Mary Ann Marin

The Candidate for the Canvassing Authority was asked the following:

-          What is your interest in serving on the Authority?

-          Are you prepared for the time commitment – including the entirety of the day on Election Days?

-          Are you able to lift 25 pounds, as required by the position?

-          While this is an alternate position, are you prepared to serve and participate at a time commitment equivalent to a full member?

-          Do you have any prior board experience, and what are some helpful things you think that board did well that others can learn from?
